Club championships finals day!

Hi All,

Finals Day is coming up fast.  It’s on a Sunday this year – the 5th July and we would really like to see as many of you as possible at the club to support our best players playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles and our good club players in the plate finals at the same time – a feast of tennis.

I will send out the programme in a day or so, but the junior finals are in the morning and the Championship finals are from 1.00pm. We have a invested in a brand new set of trophies for the main events and there is a new Honours Board up at the club as we filled up the previous one!

Throughout the day, we will have hot dogs and bacon rolls as well as cakes, tea, coffee and cold drinks on the go. We will have our informal barbeque, as we have done over the last couple of years, in the evening, where the trophies will be presented to celebrate our winners. We ask that you bring your own meat and a sharing salad dish or pudding. We will supply beer and wine to buy cheaply. If you could indicate whether you will be coming that would help with the drinks purchases!

Can I put out an appeal for some cakes and some volunteers to help serve the food over the day? Even if you can only do an hour or so, it would be a big help. Let me know if you are willing to put in stint and or bring a cake.

Pop it in your diary it will be a fun day. See you there.

Kind regards,

Mens A vs Camberley B

A fantastic result last night taking maximum 18 points with a 9-0 WIN over CAMBERLEY B. I suspect this pretty much condemns them to the drop.

The points picked up last night gives us a fighting chance of remaining in this league, still it will be very tight !

Our run-in is not the easiest with 4 games to play:

Wednesday 1st July AWAY to ROWLEDGE

Monday 13th July AWAY to CAMBERLEY A

Friday 24th July HOME to AVONDALE A

Monday 27th AWAY to BRIGHTWELL A

We can pick-up valuable points in all the above remaining fixtures – as always it rather depends on the teams they and we field on the night.

Our next Match AWAY to ROWLEDGE Wednesday 1st July, the line-up will be:

Haynes’y, Patrick, me, Jamie, Mr T. and Kev Tucker

Here’s hoping they don’t have all their coaches and Surrey A Reserve players available, unlike when they visited our place.

Mens A vs Frimley

A return to winning ways last night at home to Frimley, registering a 6-3 win and picking up 12 valuable points.  We still have some work to do to remain in this league, though. There are 5 fixtures remaining – all listed below with some commentary.

Our next Match is HOME to Camberley B, next Monday 22nd. This is a MUST WIN match,  ideally picking up close to maximum points.

The line-up will be:  Haynes’y, Patrick, me, Jamie, Mr T. and Kev Tucker

Our remaining matches post Monday 22nd are:-

  • Wednesday 1st July: AWAY to ROWLEDGE (they turned-out a very strong side when we played them at HOME but we can pick-up valuable points here)
  • Monday 13th July: AWAY to CAMBERLEY A (with a strong side out we can pick-up points here for sure)
  • Friday 24th July: HOME to AVONDALE
  • Monday 27th July: AWAY to BRIGHTWELL

These last three will be very competitive, tough matches. The league is likely to be contested between these 3 sides.

Aegon match vs Worplesdon

Team was Patrick, myself, Kev and Jamie.

Well it was early, drizzling with rain, but that wasn’t going to stop us notching up a convincing 12-0 win.

It might sound like it was easy, it was for some, but the rest of us decided we wanted our money’s worth of the morning/early afternoon.

Patrick playing at no.1 had a long competitive match but came out on top winning 6-4 6-3 after about 2 hours. I myself played at no. 2 winning 7-5 6-4, which took 1.45 mins.  Kev decided to grace us with his presence after driving past the club 3 times, played at no. 3 won 6-0 7-5 after trailing 2-5.  Finally, Jamie played at no. 4 completing a clean sweep of the singles winning 6-0 6-0. ‘Not sure a bead of sweat graced his forehead.

Doubles was then another fun affair with Patrick and Jamie dispatching their opponents 6-0 6-1. Kev and myself, however, wanted to stay on court that little longer, taking the first set 7-6  – with the pair of us wonder how we got ourselves into this mess.  We then dispatched the second set 6-1.

After 2 matches we are top of the league with 2 matches left. Both of these are very winnable so, if all goes to plan, we should finish top of the table.

Mens A vs Brightwell

Well, Friday evening proved to be another tough match as expected. The result was probably not helped by the fact that I tinkered with the pairings.  We lost 7-2 on the night.

We are rooted to the foot of the table at present. It’s clear that the next 3 matches against Frimley, Camberley B (both at home) plus Rowledge (away on 1st July) will rather define our season.

Tonight we have the following line-up:  Haynes’y, Patrick, me, Jamie, Mr T. and Shaun Fishburn.

Next couple of matches are:-

Monday 22nd June: HOME to CAMBERLEY B (this is definitely WINNABLE)

Wednesday 1st July: AWAY at ROWLEDGE (this is also, depending upon our and their line-ups)

Mens A vs Camberley A

A solid Camberley A team turned out yesterday and were just too strong for us on the night, winning 8-1.

Many of the games were competitive but they had a little more ‘in the tank’ than we did.

After playing 5 of 12 matches, we lie bottom of the league with 28 points. There is a bit of a gap between the top 2 sides and the bottom 3 clubs, as expected. I suspect we are in a fight with Camberley B and Frimley to remain in this league.

Next up is Brightwell this Friday 12th at home.  This will be another real toughie – they are a strong club.

The line-up is:  Haynes’y, Patrick, me, Jamie, Mr T. – still finalising the 6th player.

02 Jun

Mens A vs Avondale

Last night we succumbed to an 8-1 loss against a strong Avondale side, playing on their ‘grease-lightning’ surface that rather favours the home side.

We weren’t helped at all by the fact that I didn’t make the match, being stranded at Stansted airport. This left us short a pair, my thanx to Patrick who stood in as el captaino !

Anyway, we now have a run of 4 home matches and need to pick up some good points to ensure we remain in this competitive league.

Next up is Camberley A on Monday 8th June at home.  The line-up for this match is: Haynes’y, Patrick, me, Jamie, Kev Tucker and Mr T.

Following this we have:-

Friday 12th June HOME to BRIGHTWELL
Monday 15th June HOME to FRIMLEY
Monday 22nd June HOME to CAMBERLEY B

Please let me know your availability asap.
