Mens A vs Avondale (final match)

Despite a great result last night, beating the league champions Avondale at home 5-4 and adding 10 further points to our tally, we have fallen short by 4 points. We just needed to win two more sets to avoid relegation.

As you can see from the league table, it was all very tight in the end with only 6 points between 3rd and 6th places. After playing 108 sets of tennis and racking up 106 points, 6 wins from 12 against some strong opposition, it still wasn’t quite enough to remain in the top league.

Time to rest-up now and prepare ourselves for the Winter season that will likely commence in early October.

Thanx to all who played a match or two this Summer season. Your efforts are much appreciated.

Cheers,

P

Mens A vs Camberley A

Friday saw us add a further 12 points to our tally with a 6-3 win away to Camberley A – rather helped by the fact they only turned out two pairs.

The final match of the summer season is tomorrow at home to Avondale, the line-up being:-

Me, Patrick, Mr T., Richard Awbery, Shaun Fishburn and Ollie Kirk

We need 16 points to guarantee safety. This will be tough against Avondale who are top of the league and, given our result on Friday, they will be champions (as long as they field two or more pairs tonight).

Mens A vs Brightwell

Well, we were thwarted by the good old British weather again this past Friday against Avondale. Someone told me it is our British summer, so what do you expect?!?

Anyway last night was a different story, but the weather was still not helping playing conditions. We arrived at the new Brightwell club with a force 5 gale blowing across all 5 courts. The match was played, with the same conditions for both sides, and we came away with a very good win, 7-2 – picking up what could be an incredibly valuable 14 points.

The rubbers have yet to be entered, but this will leave us on 84 points with two matches to play. We are 10 points behind Frimley with one game in-hand. Unfortunately, Frimley have Camberley B to play and they seem to have given up on this season. It will be a very close finish to Division 1.

Regarding our final two matches, one is confirmed away to Camberley A on Friday 7th August. Our final home game against Avondale is still to be re-arranged – ‘will keep you all posted on that.

Mens A vs Camberley A (rained off)

Unfortunately last night we were thwarted by the good ole British weather. We made a start and after 5 sets we trailed 3-2 then the misty rain descended, we considered continuing but the majority felt the courts were just too slippery.

Unsure what the outcome will be, either we’ll share the points on a pro-rata basis taking into account the end point 3-2 or it will be reorganised; I will confirm.

Thanx guys for last night, we definitely have 2 matches left, possibly still 3.

Very tight the league – it’s between us and Frimley.  They currently have 10 points more than we do. It’s still possible to close the gap but will be very close in the end.  They have a pretty tough run-in excepting Camberley B, who we have played twice.

I will confirm the line-up for Friday 24th July, our home game against Avondale A, in the coming days.

Mens A vs Rowledge

A close fought match last night against Rowledge on a very warm evening, we narrowly lost in the end  5-4, although picking-up 8 valuable points is not to be sniffed at.

There are 3 matches left to play: 2 away and 1 at home.  I do believe we can stay up but it is going to be super tight in the end.

Monday 13th July AWAY to CAMBERLEY A

Friday 24th July HOME to AVONDALE A

Monday 27th AWAY to BRIGHTWELL A

Our next match is away to Camberley A on Monday 13th July.  The line-up will be:-

Doug, Patrick, me, Jamie, Mr T. – the final player to be confirmed

NOTE:  At our last home match on Friday 24th July, we plan to have a couple cold ones after the match and reflect on the season, reminisce, etc.  I hope as many of you can make it as possible !!

Cheers

Mens A vs Camberley B

A fantastic result last night taking maximum 18 points with a 9-0 WIN over CAMBERLEY B. I suspect this pretty much condemns them to the drop.

The points picked up last night gives us a fighting chance of remaining in this league, still it will be very tight !

Our run-in is not the easiest with 4 games to play:

Wednesday 1st July AWAY to ROWLEDGE

Monday 13th July AWAY to CAMBERLEY A

Friday 24th July HOME to AVONDALE A

Monday 27th AWAY to BRIGHTWELL A

We can pick-up valuable points in all the above remaining fixtures – as always it rather depends on the teams they and we field on the night.

Our next Match AWAY to ROWLEDGE Wednesday 1st July, the line-up will be:

Haynes’y, Patrick, me, Jamie, Mr T. and Kev Tucker

Here’s hoping they don’t have all their coaches and Surrey A Reserve players available, unlike when they visited our place.

Mens A vs Frimley

A return to winning ways last night at home to Frimley, registering a 6-3 win and picking up 12 valuable points.  We still have some work to do to remain in this league, though. There are 5 fixtures remaining – all listed below with some commentary.

Our next Match is HOME to Camberley B, next Monday 22nd. This is a MUST WIN match,  ideally picking up close to maximum points.

The line-up will be:  Haynes’y, Patrick, me, Jamie, Mr T. and Kev Tucker

Our remaining matches post Monday 22nd are:-

  • Wednesday 1st July: AWAY to ROWLEDGE (they turned-out a very strong side when we played them at HOME but we can pick-up valuable points here)
  • Monday 13th July: AWAY to CAMBERLEY A (with a strong side out we can pick-up points here for sure)
  • Friday 24th July: HOME to AVONDALE
  • Monday 27th July: AWAY to BRIGHTWELL

These last three will be very competitive, tough matches. The league is likely to be contested between these 3 sides.

Mens A vs Brightwell

Well, Friday evening proved to be another tough match as expected. The result was probably not helped by the fact that I tinkered with the pairings.  We lost 7-2 on the night.

We are rooted to the foot of the table at present. It’s clear that the next 3 matches against Frimley, Camberley B (both at home) plus Rowledge (away on 1st July) will rather define our season.

Tonight we have the following line-up:  Haynes’y, Patrick, me, Jamie, Mr T. and Shaun Fishburn.

Next couple of matches are:-

Monday 22nd June: HOME to CAMBERLEY B (this is definitely WINNABLE)

Wednesday 1st July: AWAY at ROWLEDGE (this is also, depending upon our and their line-ups)

Thanx

Mens A vs Camberley A

A solid Camberley A team turned out yesterday and were just too strong for us on the night, winning 8-1.

Many of the games were competitive but they had a little more ‘in the tank’ than we did.

After playing 5 of 12 matches, we lie bottom of the league with 28 points. There is a bit of a gap between the top 2 sides and the bottom 3 clubs, as expected. I suspect we are in a fight with Camberley B and Frimley to remain in this league.

Next up is Brightwell this Friday 12th at home.  This will be another real toughie – they are a strong club.

The line-up is:  Haynes’y, Patrick, me, Jamie, Mr T. – still finalising the 6th player.

Thanx

Mens A vs Avondale

Last night we succumbed to an 8-1 loss against a strong Avondale side, playing on their ‘grease-lightning’ surface that rather favours the home side.

We weren’t helped at all by the fact that I didn’t make the match, being stranded at Stansted airport. This left us short a pair, my thanx to Patrick who stood in as el captaino !

Anyway, we now have a run of 4 home matches and need to pick up some good points to ensure we remain in this competitive league.

Next up is Camberley A on Monday 8th June at home.  The line-up for this match is: Haynes’y, Patrick, me, Jamie, Kev Tucker and Mr T.

Following this we have:-

Friday 12th June HOME to BRIGHTWELL
Monday 15th June HOME to FRIMLEY
Monday 22nd June HOME to CAMBERLEY B

Please let me know your availability asap.

Thanx
