Forty children aged from just 3 up to 10 years took part in the free fun at Elstead Tennis Club during the half term. New coach Jorge Martin, was ably assisted by Cosmin Barbu and Max Holland, the ladies A team who had been playing a match in the morning, committee members and many parents.
EVTC Fun Day 26.10.16
The day was a great success, with Jorge and Cosmin’s ‘snake’warm up proving to be a particular highlight. A number of children who were trying tennis for the first time have signed up to the autumn coaching programme.
It hardly seems a year ago but the 2nd Annual Cricket Match between the Tennis Club and Elstead Cricket Club Select team took place last Sunday resulting in a resounding victory for the Tennis Club, after our defeat last year in the first fixture.
We posted a highly creditable 236 in 40 overs and the cricket club could only manage 81 all out despite fielding 12 players to our 11!
Notable highlights were Peter Lincoln batting very well holding the innings together in the early stages scoring 37, Ollie Kirk contributed a typically flamboyant 37, a swash-buckling 56 not out from potential new member Nathan Thomas and great contributions from Sam Tunbridge, Shaun Fishburn and a cameo from Tony Hutchinson in his first innings in 30 years.
The level of bowling was particularly taxing for the home team with Ollie Lincoln (u13) taking 2 for 9 off 5 overs, Shaun had 2 for 12 off 4, Sam with 2 for 3 off 2, Rupert 2 for 5 off 2 and Chris Holland 1 for 5 off 2, Ollie Kirk was the other wicket taker with a slick run out by Sam. On a personal level it was great to do some sport for the first time in 6 months even if my contribution was patchy at best!
The match itself was a typically well contested but very friendly contest and we would like to thank Rupert for organising the day wearing his tennis club hat over his cricket club one and to Bridget Lincoln for the great tea including the new favourite – rocky road biscuits.
We’re already looking forward to the ‘decider’ next year.
A final reminder about the Wimbledon Ticket Draw this Sunday at 5.00pm. Remember, it is only for those who have registered with British Tennis and have fully paid their subs for this year. We have 28 pairs of tickets covering courts one, two and centre and there will be one pair available per family for the lucky draw winners (I’ve attached a list of tickets to help with your diaries). You will be given instructions on how to pay on Sunday. If you can’t make it yourself, don’t forget that you can organise a proxy. There may also be some cheaper final weekend tickets for No 1 court – particularly good if you haven’t been to Wimbledon before.
We are organising an American Tennis tournament which is a fun event suitable for all levels of play starting at 2.00pm on the same day, so come and have a game before the draw.
We’re taking part in the LTA Great British Tennis Weekend again this year on Saturday 14th May and I’m looking for some volunteers to get some posters into all the local shops and amenities as soon as possible. If you could possibly spare an hour during the day it would be enormously helpful to us. We had a good response last year and would like to repeat that, if possible, to help increase the membership and show off the club. Please contact me if you can help and I’ll get the posters to you.
Some great news about our Ladies A team who completed their final match in devastating form, losing just 4 games in 8 sets to win the Aldershot Premier League, for what I believe is the first time.
The full squad through the winter was:
- Lynn Wright
- Yvonne Burrage
- Corinna Hutchinson
- Barbara Awbery
- Betty Maitland
- Beatrice Henricot
- Louise Tunbridge
- Stephanie Wright
- Lorna Whateley
- Sophie Richardson
- Georgia McCarthy
- Gill Saunders
A fantastic achievement which I hope will give them a taste for further conquests.
The draw for our allocation for Wimbledon tickets will take place on Sunday 1st May at 5.00pm. All those who have opted in and have paid their subscriptions for this year will be eligible. As always we allow one pair of tickets per family, though all eligible members of the family can enter. You will be given instructions on how to pay for the tickets when they are drawn and allocated and you will have a limited time to pay AELTC. You may use a proxy on the day if you can’t make it in person – sorry it’s the Bank Holiday weekend) but they will need to choose the date as available and pass on the payment instructions.
To add to the fun we are organising an American Fun Tournament the same afternoon from 2.00 – 4.30pm. All members are welcome at the tournament which Ollie will organise on the day and the Draw will follow.
I look forward to seeing you on the 1st.
EVTC Spring Newsletter
In this first edition of the newsletter to appear straight onto the website, I want to run through some of the great things that have happened at the club in the last 6 months.
An overwhelming objective for this year and going forward will be to increase the membership at a manageable rate to a level that will enhance our tennis offering for all and enable us to keep moving the club forward.
Club Improvements Completed
Over the course of last year we repainted courts 1 – 3 and replaced the ageing nets making a few fencing repairs along the way. All the courts have been cleaned and de-mossed again as a safety precaution; generally it’s been one of the worst winters for moss that anyone can remember so it’s good to get on top of it.
We have upgraded the automatic light on the path to the club and the grounds themselves have been well looked after by Ian Dorey under Norman’s supervision.
The new website has been really well received and is something we wish to make more of over the coming months and years as a window into our club.
We have new seats on the courts replacing the seats that have served their time.
League Team Tennis
The Winter league is just coming to an end and it has been a very successful one for our 6 teams in the Aldershot league.
As I write the Ladies A team have an excellent chance of winning the Premier League for what I believe is the first time, 10 points against one of the weaker teams will do it. The Ladies B team have recovered from a poor start to finish in third place in league 3 with an outside chance of promotion with a win against the top team.
The Men’s A team have now secured promotion to the Premier division showing great consistency over the winter months. The B team have been in a league too high for the current team and will be very competitive in league 3 next winter.
The Mixed team have both done well with the A team finishing third in league 1 and the B team winning league 2 to join them, making for some interesting match ups next season.
The ladies team in the Surrey leagues are currently 3rd in Division 2 of the midweek daytime league and are 2nd in division 4 of the main Surrey league.
As usual our sincere thanks to the various captains – Lynn Wright, Laura Parrott, Pete Almond, Mike Peck, Tony Hutchinson and Gill Saunders.
The new summer leagues start in the next month or so with Ladies A in Division 1, B in division 3, Mens A in Division 2, B in 3 and the mixed in Division 3. If there are any players who would like to be considered for any of the teams contact me in the first instance and I’ll put you in touch with the correct team captain.
Last year the Club Champs were run very well for the first time by Mhairi and Mike Peck and they have kindly agreed to do so again. There will be more details on this year’s tournament next month and hope as many members as possible will take part.
Great British Tennis Weekend
Last year saw the first initiative by the LTA to try to encourage grass roots tennis by sponsoring the Great British Tennis Weekend in May and July and we hosted a great day last year and aim to do at least one day this year.
We had great help from members on the day last year and I hope we can call on you again this time to help us promote the club to potential new members.
More details on the selected day(s) will be circulated in March.
Club Tennis Open Day
We are planning an Open Day for current and potential new members around Easter time, it is designed to encourage everyone to prepare themselves for the better weather and get onto the courts. We will again need some volunteers to help with organisation on the day, more details coming soon.
We have been lacking in this area for a few years now, we would ideally like to run a Quiz Night, a Wine tasting evening and a couple of summer barbecues using our own barbecue and maybe resurrect the Golf Day this year. Though we’ve not really placed much emphasis on fund raising at these events we could really do with the extra income so if anyone could front any one of these events please let me know.
Enjoy your tennis!
The timetable for Sunday has been published so you can pick the events you’d like to see or pop down any time to see some great tennis.

We still need some more help, whether bringing down a cake or biscuits, umpiring or helping supply teas and coffees or cooking bacon or sausages.
Thank you to those who have already agreed to help, but we need a few willing bodies.
For the evening we are running a DIY barbeque, where you bring your own meat and a general salad or equivalent and we’ll supply some beer, wine and soft drinks.
I really hope to see you at the club at some point during the day, all is set fair for a great day of tennis entertainment.
Finals Day is coming up fast. It’s on a Sunday this year – the 5th July and we would really like to see as many of you as possible at the club to support our best players playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles and our good club players in the plate finals at the same time – a feast of tennis.
I will send out the programme in a day or so, but the junior finals are in the morning and the Championship finals are from 1.00pm. We have a invested in a brand new set of trophies for the main events and there is a new Honours Board up at the club as we filled up the previous one!
Throughout the day, we will have hot dogs and bacon rolls as well as cakes, tea, coffee and cold drinks on the go. We will have our informal barbeque, as we have done over the last couple of years, in the evening, where the trophies will be presented to celebrate our winners. We ask that you bring your own meat and a sharing salad dish or pudding. We will supply beer and wine to buy cheaply. If you could indicate whether you will be coming that would help with the drinks purchases!
Can I put out an appeal for some cakes and some volunteers to help serve the food over the day? Even if you can only do an hour or so, it would be a big help. Let me know if you are willing to put in stint and or bring a cake.
Pop it in your diary it will be a fun day. See you there.
We have finally got a date for re-painting courts 1 – 3 and it will be during half term next week. These courts will be closed during the day this Friday and from Tuesday 26th until Sunday 31st May inclusive which will hopefully cause the minimum of disruption. The Booking section of the website has been updated.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
